Earlier this month BT announced its intention to delay the planned PSTN switch off of the copper based analogue line services. Originally scheduled for completion by December 2025 this has been delayed until 31 January 2027.
The Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) is the traditional analogue network used globally for voice communications over landline telephones. It is a circuit-switched system that has been the backbone of telephone communications for over a century. For various reasons, including technological advancement and high maintenance costs, the decision has been made to retire the PSTN infrastructure. You can read more about it in our various articles linked here: The 2027 PSTN Switch Off – Consolidated Info.
One reason for the delay is to allow more time for all parties to adapt to such a significant change to the way telecoms operate. User readiness is vital and extra time to ensure both businesses and individuals are in a position to make the transitions required has been considered necessary. Adding to this, infrastructure upgrades, including BT’s own roll out of fibre broadband, are proving to be complex and lengthy.
For all parties this delay means more breathing room. Extra time for you to research the options available and for us to work with you to ensure a seamless transition.
Despite the extended deadline we would still recommend you start to make your preparations sooner rather than later. Use the extra time to make the process easier and more comfortable rather than just delay any last minute rush and panic!
